Robotic Gynecologic Surgery in Israel
Robotic gynecological surgery is carried out by specialists at Herzliya Medical Center. The use of robotic technologies, such as the Da Vinci robotic system enable physicians to perform complex minimally invasive procedures. Surgeons successfully perform the most complex gynecological surgeries with miniature instruments through small incisions, which greatly reduces the recovery time and pain to a minimum. The use of robotics in gynecology facilitates the advanced treatment of:
- Pelvic organ prolapse
- Gynecological cancers
- Many other diseases.
The da Vinci Surgical System
Da Vinci utilizes 3D visualization, surgeons can then identify important anatomical features of the body during the operation. The use of robotics in gynecology, involves maneuvering miniature precision tools with a special control panel, which is not always possible in conventional laparoscopic procedure or open surgery.
The Safety of Da Vinci Robotics
Da Vinci robotic system is the first of surgical robotics to be internationally recognized by the FDA, as a safe and effective tool adhering to the organization’s strict protocols for food and medicine. The use of robotics in gynecology is considered as safe as the conventional surgical treatment and was approved by the FDA in 2005.
Robotic surgery can be performed only by a qualified surgeon who has been trained to work in robotics. Throughout the procedure an assistant surgeon is present to change the necessary tools. When conducting robotic gynecological surgery for a hysterectomy, myomectomy, among others, the surgeon uses a special control platform. After a few small incisions in the abdominal cavity, tools are inserted and connected to the platform. During the operation, the tools simulate the movement of hands and wrists, which are fully controlled by the surgeon and physician at the management console.
The Advantages of Robotic Surgery
Traditional open gynecologic surgery is performed by a cross-section in the lower abdomen (cesarean section) or with a vertical incision from the pubic bone to the area just above the navel. These cuts lead to a sustained period of recovery, for up to six weeks, as well as an increased risk of developing infections. The aesthetic drawback of abdominal operations are noticeable scars and a weakness of the abdominal muscles.
Advantageous features of robotic gynecological surgery:
- Safe and FDA approved
- Fewer (small) incisions than conventional surgery, less scarring later
- Higher surgical precision and improved access to affected area, leading to a more successful surgery
- Minimum body injury and blood loss
- Minimum postoperative pain and discomfort
- Reduced risk of postoperative infection and fewer complications
- Rapid recovery and a shorter hospital stay.
The choice of the surgical technique depends on various factors, and, unfortunately, not every patient is a suitable candidate for minimally invasive and/ or robotic procedures. At Herzliya Medical Center the most effective method of gynecological treatment is selected in accordance with the patient’s case by carefully analyzing their medical history and test results.
